A good friend of mine attended a party I was having and brought his daughter Natalie with him. Without knowing anything about her, I was so touched by her spirit, enthusiasm and innocence that I began thinking about how each of us has to varying degrees lost some layers of each of those qualities from our childhood and how great it would be to regain some of that as we get older, when we really need it.
As I found out more about her, I realized how powerful an example this girl could be for many others. She had some very difficult obstacles to overcome as a child and growing up amongst peers that sometimes are not very understanding can be trying for any child.
She faced those obstacles bravely and persevered as she proved to herself and others that she would not let those hurdles keep her from happiness and accomplishment.
Her story, her spirit and glow, inspired me to write a song about her in hopes that others facing similar circumstances in their lives may connect and be inspired themselves. Thank God for people like Natalie. I am truly blessed to know her and be able to tell her story.

Natalie
by James Buckley (2005)

Do do do….do do do…. Do do do Do do do….do do do…. Do do do

Natalie, a wonder of a girl, who has a heart as pure as gold as sure as pearls reflect the light.
With every bit of truth inside she struggled quite sincerely as she saw the world much different than you and I

But Natalie was not about to let her spirit die

Do do do….do do do…. Do do do Do do do….do do do…. Do do do

It’s hard enough to flower as a child if no one understands that every one of us has got a soul
And people can be cruel sometimes if they don’t see how hard life is and lose themselves inside their perfect world
But Natalie was not about to let her spirit die

Spread your wings and fly, Oh Natalie
You know how to make dreams become reality
Sing your song to us, Oh Natalie
And don’t ever let your spirit slip away

Against the odds, against the wall, Oh Natalie you gave it all and one day you would teach us all the truth
That living each and every day we miss something we’ve thrown away, our spirit and our innocence in youth
But Natalie was not about to let her spirit die

Spread your wings and fly, Oh Natalie
You know how to make dreams become reality
Sing your song to us, Oh Natalie
And don’t ever let your spirit slip away
